Designing your Data Architecture for Performance

Over the last 10 years, the bottleneck relative to data access performance and scalability has moved from the database to the data connectivity layer. This change has occurred due to advancements in the core database engine, improvements in database monitoring and tuning, and cheaper and more powerful hardware. In a well tuned application environment, between 75 to 95% of the response time associated with database access can be attributed to the data connectivity layer. It is now critical to ensure that your data architecture carefully considers the performance impact of your ODBC, JDBC, ADO.NET drivers and providers as well as XML based functionality such as XQuery. In this presentation, we’ll look at how your data architecture should effectively leverage network requests and disk I/O, the two most resource intensive activities associated with a database system. We’ll delve into technical features such as connection pooling, transaction management, prepared statement usage, parameter usage, data type specific processing, etc. We’ll discuss the considerations that should be included in your overall data architecture and relate that to different technology scenarios – client/server apps, server-based apps, SOA, etc. We’ll also introduce best practices for measuring and benchmarking the performance and scalability of your application’s database access code. We’ll discuss how you can create an environment that accurately simulates your production system, and how you can design tests that accurately measure performance and scalability.
