DataDirect Shadow Web Server

For organizations who may not want to deploy Web services or component (JavaBean, C#) technologies, simple Web enablement of mainframe data and programs using a MVS- based Web server offers a viable alternative to expanding access to legacy data and improving the efficiencies of business processes that rely on mainframe applications.

Product Description
Shadow z/EnterpriseWeb Server is a native mainframe Web server that allows companies to Web-enable mainframe data applications without the costs and complexity of multi-tier server architectures. Shadow z/EnterpriseWeb Server enables organizations to rapidly create composite applications by integrating existing z/OS applications and data with no modifications to the existing applications in many cases.

Key Features

  • Allows users to rapidly Web-enable z/OS data and transactions
  • Leverages existing production infrastructures and in-house z/OS expertise
  • Speeds time-to-market with rapid install without interruption of existing operations
  • Combines mainframe performance, reliability, security and control with the ease of use of a Web browser

Rapid Web Enablement
By design, Shadow Web Server enables rapid Web-enablement through leveraging of existing MVS developer skill sets, existing MVS infrastructure in change control mechanisms, monitoring and support procedures. Support is provided for AutoHTML for IMS/TM and CICS, allowing rapid Web-enablement of applications. This non-invasive process generates HTML templates populated with runtime data from existing unaltered IMS and CICS transactions, and the merged HTML is then sent directly to the Web browser. The product has been architected to provide:

  • High performance - multiple address space load balancing, workload management and dynamic thread pooling
  • High scalability - adapts to volume increases
  • Ensures data consistency, availability and reliability from a Web browser
  • Improved throughput and rapid response time.

Benefits of Shadow Web Server

  • Eliminates performance bottlenecks – maximizing Web browser-to-mainframe and Web-to-host and allows users to leverage existing business infrastructures and in-house z/OS expertise - regardless of project complexity.
  • Secure Mainframe Web Enablement – supports existing zOS security systems ( RACF, CA-ACF2, CA-Top Secret) to validate user IDs and passwords.
  • Rapid Install and deployment – can be easily installed and running in less than one day without operational interruption for retraining or recoding

Shadow z/EnterpriseWeb Server provides direct access from popular Web browsers to z/OS to support IT initiatives at every level, from simple desktop access to mainframe data and transactions to enabling enterprise-wide initiatives.
