DataDirect's Shadow z/Direct for Programs

Shadow z/Direct provides direct SQL access to mainframe programs via industry standard client drivers – ODBC, JDBC, and JCA.

For high performance, scalable access to mainframe business logic - CICS/TS, IMS/TM, and Natural programs – you need only to make a routine SQL/database stored procedure call through Shadow z/Direct. The mainframe database stored procedures can then be employed by distributed applications exactly as those same systems utilize stored procedures on locally available relational databases.

Shadow z/Direct provides distributed application developers with a mechanism to initiate mainframe applications, no matter if the source is legacy business logic or screen logic. Shadow Direct uses the metadata created from application programs and screen maps to create database-stored procedure metadata maps. All of the underlying mapping is transparent to the developer who simply codes standard SQL/stored procedure calls. These structures are 100 percent compatible with standard database stored procedure metadata calls, providing maximum interoperability. At runtime these maps convert stored procedure calls into the appropriate underlying calling syntax for the mainframe application subsystem.

Key Features
Shadow z/Direct extends the Shadow mainframe integration suite to provide high-performance legacy integration with mainframe programs, as well as support for service-oriented architecture (SOA) for host integration.

  • Metadata Support - Complete metadata support, as either WSDL or database stored procedures for dynamic integration with leading development environments and business intelligence tools.
  • Transactional Support - Complete XA two-phase commit (2PC) transaction support via Shadow Enterprise Transactions. Transactional access to the application subsystem is achieved via Shadow support for Resource Recovery Services (RRS)-enabled RRS Attachment Facility (RRSAF) interface.
  • XML Support - In conjunction with the Shadow JDBC and JCA client drivers, information from mainframe programs can be returned to the calling application in XML format
  • Flexible Security - Seamlessly integrates into existing mainframe security infrastructures using mainframe SAF services, which support RACF, ACF/2, and TopSecret mainframe security packages in order to maintain the integrity of application security; exploits SOAP header for UID/PWD or UID; supports SSL encrypted sessions

Features for CICS

  • Superior Performance and Scalability - The IBM EXCI interface uses pipes for communication. The optimized EXCI interface available with Shadow z/Direct manages these pipes in a manner that eliminates the costly overhead associated with creating and using these pipes, often resulting in a 2x gain in performance over traditional EXCI implementations.
  • Flexible Access to CICS Programs - To improve performance and eliminate communication limits within CICS, the Shadow Business Logic Interface for CICS provides exclusive capabilities that break through the 32K COMMAREA limit
  • Load Balancing and EXCI Failover Support - To optimize performance, Shadow routes application requests to the CICS address space with the most available resources. Similarly, if an EXCI region fails, Shadow automatically routes traffic to another available region.

Features for IMS

  • Robust Performance and Scalability - To support the high-volume, mission-critical processing required by many organizations that use IMS/TM, Shadow supports transaction aggregation and filtering and provides other performance optimizations
  • Support for Standard IMS/TM Protocols - To ensure operation consistent with your organizational standards, Shadow z/Direct supports the APPC and OTMA protocols

Features for Natural

  • Direct Solution for Natural - Fewer "moving parts" than generalized messaging solutions, which are often used to access Natural, providing greater reliability and higher performance
  • No Additional Programming - Eliminates additional programming required to integrate existing Natural programs through generalized messaging solutions

Make the Most of Your Mainframe Resources
Shadow z/Direct lets you leverage your mainframe application resources in new ways that do not compromise the transaction capacity and reliability of your legacy environment. Its ease of installation, configuration, and use can save you time and expense. Shadow z/Direct delivers high-volume scalability and reliability features such as 2PC and advanced diagnostics and controls, while giving you the high-level security you've come to expect from your mainframe systems.
