The DataDirect Connect family of database drivers for ODBC, JDBC, and ADO.NET supports the native XML capabilities provided by the database vendors. Individual support for Oracle, DB2, Microsoft SQL Server, and Sybase is critical because the level of support provided by each database vendor varies. The prompt support for these native capabilities is important since the database vendors are adding new XML features in each new release of their database products.
For applications that predominantly use relational data but have an occasional need for XML data, the Connect products provide developers the flexibility to access XML data however it is stored in the database. Where available, (for example, Oracle 9i R2 and above and IBM DB2 v9), the Connect products can process XML data that was created with the native XML data type. In other situations, character data types can be used to store and process XML data.
DataDirect's active role in the specification process will allow us to provide early support for any XML features that are adopted by the SQL ANSI, JDBC, ODBC, and ADO.NET specifications. For example, the JDBC 4.0 specification will include support for an XML data type that will be supported in the Connect for JDBC product.
