Abstract
THE BOTTOM LINE
Independent software vendors (ISVs) that embed DataDirect drivers can leverage DataDirect's expertise to improve data connectivity. Using DataDirect helps them reduce cost and risk so they can focus on innovation and competitive advantage.
THE CHALLENGE
ISVs developing applications must determine how to most cost-effectively and efficiently connect their applications to the underlying database. Although database vendors such as Microsoft, Oracle, IBM, and others provide ISVs with their own proprietary drivers to connect the ISV's application to the underlying database, using a vendor's proprietary driver can pose significant challenges for ISVs:
- Initially, the ISV must select between multiple versions of drivers from each vendor; must invest resources in coding, testing, and certifying the driver; and must repeat that process multiple times in order to run an application on multiple databases.
- On an ongoing tactical basis, ISVs must maintain multiple drivers and stay up to date on any maintenance required for those drivers.
- On a strategic basis, ISVs must plan for both the database vendor's product upgrade cycle and their own application upgrade cycle to determine which version of which driver to choose, test, and certify at each upgrade point.
